The absence of allusions to Israel’s history and to great prophetic themes like the covenant does not mean the wisdom authors were unaware of them. Rather, their aim was to apply the principles of Israel’s covenant faith to everday attitudes, actions, and relationships.
The prime mission of Proverbs is to spell out strikingly, memorably, and concisely just what it means to be fully at God’s disposal.
As effective as the proverbs were as guide to success, they could be misleading if viewed as magical sayings which would always and automatically bring results.
